A letter in file; Gerald was born in Mandan, North Dakota in the Mandan Deaconess Hospital, and was raised on a farm in the community known as Blue Grass. He started school 5 years of age 1/4 mile from home, and walked home for lunch. His first teacher was Helen Doll. his first 8 years of school were in this little one room country school. Gerald got rheumatic fever when he was nine years old, and was a very sick boy, and was left with a bad heart murmur.
He graduated from the eight grade with his sister Bonnie in Oliver County, at Center, North Dakota. Gerald and Bonnie started high school together at New Salem he played football and basketball in high school, after two years his parents moved to the heart river 15 miles north of Carson, No. Dak. in Grant County. He graduated from Carson, No. Dak. in 1965.
Gerald was an amaeter cowboy and did wild cow milking in the Almont rodeo and took first place. He also rode bulls in the New Salem, Carson, and Almont rodeo. He rode a wild buffalo in the Fort Yates rodeo and made quite a ride.
After High School he tryed to join the service and didn't pass because of his hearing He then bought a 14 foot New Holland hay and grain swather in 1965, and did custom swathing all over the state of N. D. That fall he and Larry Dawson followed a combining crew to Colorado and helped combine Maize. After that he hauled sugar beets in Colorado and worked his way to Norman, Oklahoma, and worked on an oil rig. He came home to his parents farm for xmas in 1965. in 1966 he swathed grain and hay and worked for the Grant County Soil Conservation Service. In 1967 in April he left for Fairbanks Alaska, with Dale
Johnson the summer of 67'68 he spent working construction, and returned to North Dakota for winters. In April of 69 he came back to Alaska with Derald and Bonnie Johnson, and Dale Johnson. He then stayed in Alaska until June of 1975 when he went to Washington for 1 week to visit his parents.
On Sept. 5, 1970, he was married at the Zion Lutheran Church in Fairbanks and moved to 3367 Davis Road where he was still living there at the time of his death.
He joined (laborers hall) the Union of Operating Engineers, Local 302, in July of 1971 and worked as service oiler on the four lane highway through town. He spent 1 1/2 yrs working on the Fairbanks Anchorage Highway near Mt. McKinley. The last couple of years he worked on the Trans-Alaska pipe line. In 1974 Gerald helped move the last cat train to go to the North slope before the road, taking equipment from Bettles, Alaska to Franklin Bluff. It took 9 days to get there, working 18-20 hours a day.
In 1970 Gerald started trapping, spending many long and hard hours on his snow machine He and his partner LeRoy Shank checked traps every Sunday and at least once during the week. they originally Murphy Dome and 15 mile Livengood Rd.. then in 1974 they purchased a trap line on Beaver Creek for $800 .00. His dream was to trap a Wolverine and on christmas eve 1975 he finally caught one. They trapped mainly for Martin and Lynx, with hopes of catching some wolves, but that was never realized. Gerald also hunted wolves from an airplane. He was a gunner for Jerry Landgrebe. He did this for 1 season, then annual hunting was no longer legal. He also went sheep hunting in the Brooks Range twice . The
first time getting a 3/4 curl ram, and in 1975 he got a full curl ram.
On December 27, 1975, we went out to his brother Jim house to work on snowmachines. Gerald's machine had to have the clutch serviced so he could go trapping Sunday they worked on machines all morning and Jim's wife Kathy and I took Greg to see Snow White. We returned home about 2:30 in the afternoon and Gerald and Jim had taken their machines out to make sure they were working right. They rode around the neighborhood at 2 Mile Badger Road for a while then stopped in to visit a friend of Gerald's. they visited with Gene Scott, then about 8:00 pm left there and were on their way back to Jim's for supper. They
were about 2 blocks from Jim's when the accident occured. Greg saw flashing red lights and came to show them to me. Kathy and I went outside as an ambulance arrived. We asked Ray Wilbur to drive around the area then because seeing the ambulance made us nervous. Ray came back and told us it was their snow machines and they had been taken to the hospital. So Ray took Kathy and I to the hospital about 10:30 where we waited till after midnite when the trooper came to give us the news.
Gerald was baptised in the United Church of Christ as a baby, and was confirmed into that faith at 14 years of age.
