Melvin Allen DAY (THOMPSON)2 was born on 18 December 1928 in Flasher, Morton Co., North Dakota.3 Infor. from Myrtle Thompson. He was born Thompson, but legally changed his name to Day. He was raised by Clara and Henry Day. His real father was Theodore Carl Thompson. His mother, Minnie Belle (Culver) Brown. She died 5/16/1930. Melvin was less than two. Theodore couldn't care for the baby so the Day's took him to raise. Also infor. from Luella Thompson Feland. He owns trucks, and hauls milk to a Creamery. See rin 2369, who is one and the same person. He prefers and uses the name Day. He is 7th day Adventist.
A newspaper article in file dated; Boise, Saturday, March 29, 1980; VALLEY MILKMAN TO TRADE HEAVY CANS FOR TANK TRUCKER, by Mark Crane, The Idaho Statesman, It was 8:30 am and Mel Day had already been working 6 hours. He steered the big truck through a muddy yard, parked beside the barn and started tossing 10 gallon milk cans into racks in the back.
A reporter watching, wondered why Day was loading the truck with empty cans- it wasn't until a few drops sloshed out from under a lid that he realized the cans were all filled to the brim.
" They each weigh 110 lbs.," Day said not breathing hard. " Once you get the hang of it, you can throw them from the ground to the top.
Day 51, has been hauling canned milk in the Treasure Valley since 1964. His is a seven day-a-week job, and he said he hasn't missed a day since Sep. 3, 1967 but in two weeks Day said, not breathing hard, it will change. The Creamery Association in Caldwell has set April 30 as the final day they will accept milk shipped in cans. The Creamery's old can lines are obsolete, and so few dairy farmers still use cans that the creamery can no longer afford to keep the cream lines open.
Day has given his customers notice that April 15 will be his last day hauling cans. The creameries ban on can-shipped milk is not a financial disaster for Day. He is partner in Contract Haulers Inc., a group of truckers who haul milk in tanker trucks. After March 15, he will start driving a tanker on a new route.
Won't it be nice not having to lift all of those cans? " No! with a tanker you have to hook up hoses, measure the milk, take samples, make out tickets- It's just slower- you do a lot of waiting around." Day said. " I'd rather just lift the cans in and drive away."
Day said he will miss the farmers on his route too. He said he doesn't know the ones from the early part of his route, Boise, Star, and Kuna, very well. They are still in bed when he stops at their barns, but he is friends with many of the farmers who live near Meridian and on into Canyon County." They feed me cookies and fudge at Christmas," Day said. " They're all good people . I was friends with the kids when school was out."
Day stopped to chat with some of the farmers. There was John R. Pinkston, 403 W. Chinden Blvd., west of Boise. Pinkston said he used to milk 59 cows- 22 cans of milk for Day to pick up. Pinkston chose to retire rather than try to meet the high cost of converting his dairy from can to bulk operation . Now he has just two cows: Brownie, who supplies the family with milk, and another cow that nurses three calves. Pinkston was not bitter. He said he sold his cows for a good price, and he is drawing Social Security. This would be Day' s last stop at Pinkston's farm. The two traded jokes for a few minutes, then Day jumped into the cab and roared off, splashing through the puddles.
There was Lenard Madsen, 6410 W. Joplin Road, northwest of Meridian, who elected to convert to bulk operating. The new lumber nailed alongside the old beaten boards on Madson's barn indicated where the wall had been knocked out so a bulk tank could be moved in. Madsen invited Day into the milk room, where Day admired the new equipment that will replace the old can cooler.
" I must be nuts, 60 years old and starting this kind of deal," Madsen said. " I'll probably just milk till I die."
Since Madsen is converting to bulk, he and Day will continue doing business. That seemed to suit both men.
Hauling canned milk has been good to Day. He said he has a new car, a new pickup, and an $80,000 home. Tossing all those cans has apparently been good for him too, for he does it with gusto. Day considers this day a vacation- he was hauling a mere 130 cans. He talked about the days when he really worked: " Six years ago, I was hauling 15 ton a day- stacked the cans on triple decks," said Day. " You have to handle each can twice, so I was lifting 30 ton a day."
Day said he has never been one to get sick, but he did fracture some ribs once in a fall. He said he had to grit his teeth a lot, but he never missed a day on his route.
