Viola May PETERS2,5 was born on 8 March 1946 in Ephrata, Grant Co., Washington.3 Vi and Joe own two garnet factories. Vi is very artistic. She works with ceramics, and has taken up water and oil painting. My parents are Albert and Dorothy Peters. They taught us to go to church and that was the greatest gift any parent can do for their childern. It is so far greater in value...a gift more precious than diamonds or gold. This gift is true love, joy, peace, and life beyond the grave. It's yours by turning away from sin, and then learning about and following Jesus Christ.
I do love Jesus because:
"He gives hope when it seems there is none."
"He gives life when our candle burns short."
"He gives peace when our world is in turmoil."
"He gives strength when we are weak."
"He loves us when no one cares."
"He washes us whiter than snow."
Vi came to live with me the summer between my first and second year at Southwestern. We had some great times running around with our friends. Vi has become my prayer partner for my school children, what a blessing! Since she has started praying for me every day I can sure tell a difference in my classes. Thank you so much Vi. By Ruby

A letter in file; 2/12/1977, Dear Luella; You really sent an interesting letter. Thanks for all the information. It inspired me to see again what Wartburg College's library had. Before I'd looked for LaSalle Co. and the Fox River settlement, but with nothing much there. This time with the date from you, I looked up Norwegian immigration for the years including 1837 . The first book I read had our gr. grandfather's name in it. It also agrees with the birthplace and dates etc. The Aareg might be the name of the farm.
There is a whole chapter in one book on John A. Thompson, known as snowshoe Thompson but it doesn't give his birthplace other than Norway, but he came to LaSalle Co. and went to Calif. at age of 1 in 1851. I'd read of him before but now I think he might be connected but as yet it's just my guess.
I copied off some pages of the books I read, for you- if you want more of a book or an index let me know.
Today is my sister Rowena's birthday,44, I called her in Vista, Calif. this morning. They were having 86 degree weather. We had a week of fair weather- even melted all our ice and snow. But a cold northwest wind is moving colder weather in. I think Alaska sent their winter weather over into Ohio-New York area. Our first frost went much deeper than ever in the past. usually 4 ft. is all but now it is 6 feet down and more, so it is unusual and pipes freeze up.
My brother Roger's daughter Karren broke her arm this week. She caught her mitten in the power takeoff, it also caught her sleeve. Her elbow and shoulder are swollen and sore but she fortunately was spared a worse tragedy. She is a good little chore helper. Knowing Roger I'm sure he felt the hurt as much as she.
Our youngest daughter, Paula, 17 yrs. just got over chicken Pox. She finished High School in mid-year and started classes at Wartburg. Just when she was trying to be a bit more grown-up, she gets chicken pox. She missed getting it though exposed a couple of times as a kid, but now, we didn't even know she was exposed.
Well I'll send this along- I enjoyed reading it and thought you would too. Thomas A. may have been from the poorest of the poor people, but he surely had courage, self confidence or what ever! I don't think I'll ever get my name in a book.

Bye for now, Deloris
(We sure fooled her, she's in. Warren Roe- Author.)
This is the Laube that gave some dates that conflict with Luella Thompson Feland.
We have found a second letter from Deloris Peterson Laube dated earlier than the first one entered.
Dear Luella, Dec. 22, 1974
It's been great for me to find out that another family member was interested in family history and record keeping. I had told my mother that I would take her records notes, etc, and update a previous family book we'd done in 1954 and then type up a new copy. I set Nov. 19th as my deadline and planned to put the date in notebooks for my mom's and her twin sister, Marie's birthday then. When she was at Marie and JC's last fall she was talking about it and Marie let her borrow her copy of your records as well as one from Millen Thompsons family. It was fun to look through and compare what little I had. Mom and Marie thought
you'd like a copy of their mother Betsy Thompson's line. So I am sending you a copy. Also am including what we have on Martha Thompson and a bt on Carl. They don't seem to recall or have much on Thomas A. Thompson Jr. except that he had gone to Oklahoma. A daughter had come to Strand to visit a couple of times. Mom said she believes Thomas A. Jr. was crippled with arthritis.
Do you have any more info on the area of Norway etc. from which they came? Mom and Marie's gr father on the Larson side, Johannes Larson was born on the island of Bomlo (formerly called Bomloen) and was baptized Nov. 27, 1836 in the Finnas parish. Both the Larson's and Thompson's came to Iowa from Lasalle Co. Ill. Ive been busy with what we have kept track of so far and have not done much searching into old records as yet.
Some Norwegian expressions and foods have been handed on down. Besides "lefsa" which we all like we also have a pudding, at Christmas time, called dravla. Mom used to take a bucket of whole milk, add a rennant tablet, and sit it on the back of her old cook stove all day. Near supper time she cut crossed lines across the curd which she had seperated from the whey. Then she added sugar and cooked it to a boiling point, stirring const. It thickened the whey and made it all look like butterscotch pudding with lumps in it. When cool we
would eat it and really enjoy it. My husband who is 1/2 German, thinks it's terrible. My older sister, Della, has learned to make it, lefsa and also rosettes etc. She and I usually try to sit, one on each side of John, and continually ask to have the dravla passed, much to his disgust and our fun!
We have three daughters. Lora is a sophomore at Wartburg College here in Waverly. ( a Lutheran College of the American Luth. Church) JoAnn is a senior in high school and is taking one course each semester at Wartburg. She also is a check out girl at a grocery store. Paula is a sophomore in High School. She especially enjoys our Golden Retriever called Jay. One of the pupils I had gave him to us as a puppy.
John works at Wartburg College. He is the superintendent of buildings and grounds there. I teach second graders in a Lutheran elementary school. We have a large preschool and go on up through 6th grade. Our school serves as a lab-school for Wartburg College's teacher training courses so I end up working with college students in my classroom, too.
Hope you can gain information you do not have from this stuff I'm sending. If I find any thing else along this line, I'll send them on to you.
